A young Yorkie's coat color shift begin at his feet. By the age of 6 months, the feet reveal the breed's classic golden tan. Soon afterward, the same shade appears on the base of his ears. By his first birthday, the black coat should be gone, replaced by one of steel blue, with tan hairs darkest at the roots and lightest at the tips.

At what age do yorkie puppies change color. A Yorkie's coat gradually changes for up to two years, and it may stabilize only to change again -- perhaps even into the third year. An adult's hair color can vary from a dark, steel blue to a light, silvery blue. Typically, the black turns blue (a diluted black coloring), yielding a dark steel blue or a shiny silver. Perhaps the best example is the Dalmatian, which isn't born with its telltale black or liver spots. The yorkie color conversion is well documented. It undergoes a moderate change in color when the puppy turns into an adult. With age, yorkies will develop more gold or tan instead of the black coloring, which makes it more radiant than a puppy. The black colors in the puppy will change into blue (bluish-black) with years. This does vary from dog to dog, however in general a Yorkie's hair will begin its color change at the approximate age of 6 months. This is a gradual process. You will not wake up one day and see a different dog! By the age of 1 to 2 years, the adult coloring will be in place. Some Yorkies may have more tan then black fur. But there are cases when Yorkie puppies may be born with just one color. Dog owners notice that when a Yorkie is born it may look completely black but, if you start inspecting its fur, you will be able to find some places of tan color. With age, Yorkie puppies may develop four colors of fur.

My friend's black and tan yorkie poo did change color and appearance as it grew into an adult.
